Position Description

The Student Artist-in-Residence position supports arts-based public programming at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park (SAGA) in Cornish, NH and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park (MABI) in Woodstock, VT. The position is employed as an independent contractor for the park’s partner organization, the Saint-Gaudens Memorial. The Student Artist in Residence will work at each park unit and will receive time, space, and materials to create an art project with lasting impacts on the visitor experience at one park.

This internship is aimed at supporting the next generation of creatives while increasing the parks’ capacity for arts programming on-site and in the regional community. The program will allow artists to create original works and develop skills facilitating artistic experiences across mediums in a museum and recreational setting.


Duties for each intern during this full-time summer position include:

  • Supporting Art-in-the-Park drop-in programming at SAGA and MABI for park visitors.

  • Collaborating with staff to identify and complete a legacy art project for the park(s) that matches the Student Artist-in-Residence's skills and meets the park’s needs.

  • Demonstrating plein air and studio art making while informally interacting with park visitors.

  • Developing and facilitating community creative art programming for all ages at the parks and in the region including daytime art workshops and occasional evening programming.

  • Assisting park staff and partners with school camps and youth programs.

  • Assisting the SAGA sculptor-in-residence and MABI artists-in-residence in administration of art workshops.

  • Proposing new ways to integrate arts in park operations and communications and support various art-related projects including promotional material and digital content.

  • Assisting with park-organized educator professional development opportunities.

About the Organizations

Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park (SAGA) in Cornish, NH preserves the home, studios, gardens, and museum collection of American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The park boasts the largest collection of Saint-Gaudens sculpture in the world and is the only unit of the National Park Service dedicated to a sculptor. Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park (MABI) in Woodstock, VT preserves and interprets the story of conservation history and the evolving nature of land stewardship in America. The park’s museum collection includes extensive nineteenth and twentieth century art and artifacts including Hudson River School landscape paintings. A network of gardens, carriage roads, and trails provide opportunities for nature-inspired art activities. The parks operate in partnership with the Saint-Gaudens Memorial to advance programs and educational opportunities that promote public awareness of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, his works, and the arts.

The intern must:

  • Be enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an art, art education, or related undergraduate, apprenticeship, or certificate program.

  • Work an average of 40 hours per week from mid-May through August on site at Saint-Gaudens NHP and/or Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP. The work week is Friday – Tuesday. Occasional evening programs may be required with advanced notice.

  • Collaborate with Saint-Gaudens NHP and/or Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller NHP to identify and complete a legacy art project for the park(s) that match the Student Artist-in-Residence's skills and meet park needs. Projects may include designing Junior Ranger activity sheets and visual enhancements to public spaces.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • A skilled emerging artist interested in parks and museums as sites of creativity and art education.
  • A strong communicator and relationship-builder who can effectively share artistic skills and perspectives with diverse public audiences at all skill levels.
  • A team member capable of completing assigned duties and tasks independently and in collaboration with others.
  • An art enthusiast willing to dabble in a variety of mediums and techniques beyond artist’s primary focus.

Location

Both park units are situated in the Upper Valley along the border of Vermont and New Hampshire. Cornish, NH is a rural community along the Connecticut River a short distance from Windsor, VT. Woodstock, VT is a historic town with a busy year-round tourism industry. Population centers surrounding the two parks include White River Junction and Springfield in Vermont and Lebanon and Claremont in New Hampshire. The two parks are approximately 30 minutes apart.

Support

The Student Artist-in-Residence program is coordinated and supervised by the Art-in-the-Park Coordinator based at SAGA. . Rangers at each park will provide additional day-to-day support and guidance.

Compensation

Interns will receive $3,000 per month in compensation. Each intern is responsible for their own housing. This position is not a federal job and does not confer a noncompetitive hiring authority for future federal jobs.
