Welcome to the August issue of Fathom This! from San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, your national park on San Francisco's historic waterfront. Experience your maritime heritage through guided tours, sailing on the Bay onboard the 1891 scow schooner Alma, and through the many programs the park has to offer. This August the park is presenting the Sea Music Festival, coinciding with events surrounding the America's Cup World Series. Admission to board the historic vessels berthed at Hyde Street Pier: $5, adults. Ages 15 and under, free (accompanied by an adult). Free with national park passes. Walking Hyde Street Pier, and entry to Visitor Center, Free. Information: 415-447-5000.

SEA MUSIC FESTIVAL
Saturday, August 25. Pier and Visitor Center open 9:30am - 5:30pm. Music 10:30am - 5:00pm. Admission: Free to walk Hyde Street Pier. Join the park on Saturday, August 25, for a day and evening of sea music, during America's Cup World Series events! Performances will be at venues on Hyde Street Pier, onboard historic vessels, and in the Visitor Center Theater. Experience traditional and contemporary songs of the sea with The Johnson Girls, Shay Black, Holdstock and Macleod, Dan Milner, The Barbary Ghosts, Celeste Bernardo, Hank Cramer and Brian Maskew, Salty Walt, Amelia Hogan, Tell Yer Ma, Susan Walsh, Richard Adrianowicz, Melani Van Petten and Sarah Brody, and storyteller Cynthia Cudaback.
See Bay Area performers representing countries competing in America's Cup: Dance troupes Maori Mo Ake Tonu (dances of New Zealand's Maori) and The Flying Angels Chinese Dance Company, instrumental group Les Campagnards (French music) and touring from British Columbia, Canada, famed sea music singer, instrumentalist and songwriter Tom Lewis.
Listen to traditional Irish music performed by three of the Bay Area's finest young Irish instrumentalists and singers, The Jammy Dodgers. The festival will also feature up and coming young performers representing a new generation of singers: Miriam Rubenson, Jeremy Friedenthal, Avery Risling-Sholl, and the new sea music band Month's Advance.
Workshops in Irish, French, African American and Caribbean music, Songs New and Old, and a workshop devoted to emerging performers will be onboard the 1890 ferry Eureka. The park's costumed Living History Players will be on hand on the pier and onboard historic vessels.

Two of Britain's finer performers of sea music in concert onboard the historic 1886 Glasgow-built sailing ship Balclutha! With strong voices and a striking harmony sound, Keith and Sylvia sing traditional and contemporary songs of the sea, accompanying themselves on concertina. C.A. THAYER DRY-DOCK UPDATE
The C.A. Thayer was towed from Hyde Street Pier to Bay Ship and Yacht on Wednesday, May 30 for regularly scheduled maintenance and to further her restoration. Bay Ship and Yacht will dub and fair the inboard faces of the frames, spile (that is to pattern), and fit the 4 inch "thin" ceiling, fabricate and scarph in the forward and after ends of the lower and upper sister keelsons, fabricate and fit the Pointer timbers, (two pair forward and one pair aft), fit the rudder blank that was made by shipwrights Ron Oakes and John Conway, (both now retired), service and attach the steering gear from the Wawona, reinstall Thayer's wheel and perform routine hull maintenance which includes caulking and paint.
Work began while the vessel was still in the water as soon as she arrived at the shipyard. The shipwrights began fairing the frame faces, spiling and fabricating the ceiling and sister keelsons. Caulkers horsed and re-pitched the deck caulking prior to haul out as well. The vessel was hauled up and out of the water on Thursday, June 19 and moved to position in the shipyard where the bulk of the work will take place.
The restorative work being done by the shipyard represents the last of the structural repairs to the hull that could not be completed during the 2004-2007 restoration phase. With this work done, the hull will be ready for the next phase of the restoration to begin -- the masting and rigging and building of the forward deck house. The fitting of the rudder and steering gear are a great symbolic feat helping the C.A. Thayer to transition from a passive barge to sailing ship! The vessel will be in dry-dock for a few more months.
