On October 2, 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act establishing a national system of river protection - and the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The St. Croix and Namekagon rivers are managed by the National Park Service as America's first Wild and Scenic River National Park.
