Incidents This Past Weekend in Rocky Mountain National Park

On Friday, August 27, at 2:23 p.m. park rangers received a cell phone call regarding a 50 year-old male hiker (hometown unknown) with an ankle injury near the Trough on the Keyhole Route of Longs Peak. The hiker's son was requesting assistance. Two park rangers left the Longs Peak Trailhead and met the injured man at Chasm Junction at roughly 6:30 p.m. The man continued hiking with assistance from the two rangers and reached the trailhead at 10:00 p.m. He left with family members in a personal vehicle. 

On Saturday, August 28, at 11:52 a.m. park rangers received a cell phone call that a 61-year-old male from the Denver area was 3 miles from the Twin Sisters Trailhead and was extremely ill. A hasty team of two rangers reached the patient at 1:26 p.m. A litter team of park rangers reached the man at 2:00 p.m. Thirteen park staff assisted with the litter carry-out in the field, and reached the trailhead at 4:20 p.m. He was taken by ground ambulance to Estes Park Medical Center. 

On Sunday, August 29, at 12:45 p.m. park rangers received a cell phone call that a 24-year-old female climber from Boulder took a 20 foot leader fall on Sundance Buttress in the Lumpy Ridge area. She suffered a broken ankle. Rangers reached the woman at 1:55 p.m. A technical rescue took place over a long, steep scree slope roughly 1,000 vertical feet. Park staff were assisted by Larimer County Search and Rescue. There were 27 people involved in the field with the litter carry-out. She was taken by ground ambulance to Estes Park Medical Center at 6:30 p.m.
