  Music is a natural part of these mountains, practically inseparable from those who call this special place home. The Southern Highlands have a rich and varied tradition of old-time string band music, ballad singing and bluegrass. Experience authentic music of the mountains by joining us on Sundays at the Roanoke Mountain Picnic Area to enjoy a free concert. 

  Bring a comfortable chair or blanket, a picnic and plenty of drinking water. Alcohol is prohibited. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to avoid sunburn. Concerts may be canceled in the event of inclement weather. For more information, call [phone] weekdays or [phone] on weekends. 

  To reach Roanoke Mountain Picnic Area, exit the Parkway at Mile 120.4 and follow the Mill Mountain Spur Road for 1.3 miles.
