Pipestone National Monument Honors “Indigenous Day” Proclamation

  In honor of the City of Pipestone’s proclamation changing “Columbus Day” to “Indigenous Day,” Pipestone National Monument announces Mr. Eugene Strong as a guest speaker at the Pipestone National Monument Visitor Center, in Pipestone, Minnesota, at 2:00-2:30 PM on Monday, October 8, 2018.
  
  Mr. Eugene Strong will give a short presentation “Indigenous Day in Pipestone” at the Pipestone National Monument Visitor Center auditorium, explaining the process of changing “Columbus Day” to “Indigenous Day” in Pipestone County, Minnesota.  Pipestone is joining other communities across the country who wish to recognize the role of Indigenous peoples in our nation’s history.  Mr. Strong regards Pipestone as a significant spiritual center for American Indians. Mr. Strong learned about his cultural traditions from his Pottawatomi grandfather in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where he grew up.  He wants young people to be proud of their American Indian heritage.
  
  For this reason, after his talk, he will lead anyone who would like to join him on a walk along the trail from the Visitor Center to the Three Maidens, and then proceed to the Courthouse lawn.  There, at approximately 3:30 PM, the Mayor will read a proclamation on the importance of Indigenous culture as a foundation for modern life in the United States of America.  If there is inclement weather, the proclamation will be read in the American Legion Hall.
