A "Bat" Attitude: The Extraordinary, and Economic Importance of the Diminutive Neighborhood Bat

National parks are critical to protecting the earth and its inhabitants—no matter how small or insignificant they may seem to be. Bats are primary predators of the vast numbers of night flying insects, including those that spread disease amongst animal and human populations. Fort Laramie is home to thousands of the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) that inhabit the historic buildings and a large "bat house" located at the park. Enjoy watching the bats leave their daily roosts as their nightly hunt for insects begins. Listen to bat calls and decipher what they mean using bat echo meters. Come join National Park Service Biologist, Dan Licht, dispel the myths about bats. The program begins at 7:30 with bat observation following.
