Join National Park Service Naturalist Jerry Hightower and enjoy late summer wildflowers, wildlife, and learn more of the area’s natural and cultural history. This is a leisurely hike along this fairly level trail, which passes by several types of important river bottomland wetlands and returns along the river. The wetlands attract more birds and a greater diversity of birds than any other habitats. However, with several types of habitats converging along this trail, it is a great place for wildlife in general. This area is a designated National Wildlife Viewing Area. We may investigate one or more or the tributary streams that cross our path and look for salamanders and other aquatic critters. It’s hard to imagine this area under cultivation. Yet that was the case for perhaps centuries. In the late 19th. century and early twentieth century the Powers Family and then J.C. Hyde and his family cultivated corn in the narrow river floodplain where today we view mostly the marvels of nature.

Dress for the weather; wear comfortable outdoor clothes and hiking shoes. Don't forget your drinking water, insect repellent, and a flashlight.

Note: The $5 Daily Park Pass is not required for vehicles displaying a current Annual Park Pass or America the Beautiful Pass!
