Steam Day at San Francisco Maritime

Enjoy this monthly event celebrating West Coast marine steam technology. Two programs will be available.

Donkey Engine Demonstration: Join park staff for a demonstration of the park's steam-powered donkey engine. Engines such as these were used both ashore and aboard ship for loading cargo, raising anchor and setting sails. This program involves steaming up the boiler and operating this historic piece of machinery. The engine will be running 11am-4pm.

Eureka Engine Room Open House: An open house will be hosted by park staff in the engine room of the steam-powered ferryboat Eureka. Built in 1890 to transport communters, trains, and (later in her career) automobiles across the bay, the ferryboat Eureka is a survivor of a by-gone era. What made Eureka successful, was her walking-beam steam engine. However, due the engine room's mostly below-deck nature, the public rarely has the occassion to see it today. So do not miss this opportunity to explore this amazing Victorian engineering wonderland during your visit to the park. This program will commence at 1:00pm and conclude at 4:00pm. (Please Note: In December, 2018 there will not be a Eureka Engine Room Open House. However, this activity will recommence in January, 2019)

In the case of inclement weather, a "spare the air" day, or other unforseeable circumstance, these programs may be cancelled. Please call 415-447-5000 for updates and details.
