A Call to Action: Success Stories

The National Park Service turned 100 on August 25, 2016. To us, it wasn't about cakes and candles — it was about preparing the NPS to take on the challenges of our second century. A Call to Action was our blueprint to get us there. Every partner, program, and park played a dynamic role in realizing that vision. The stories below are examples of that work, and a final report on the centennial summarizes the success of this collaboration.

  • 1840s Are Alive Again: 2015 Fur Trade Symposium at Bent’s Fort

    Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site in partnership with many other sponsors presented the 2015 Fur Trade Symposium from September 23 to September 26, 2015. More than 175 registered participants took part in this year’s event which also included period music presentations in the evening, field trips to area fur trade sites, and a performance by the Koshare Dancers of La Junta. The symposium culminated with a banquet and fandango in the fort plaza attended by 300. Read more

  • Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site

    Five men working at Bents Old Fort

    The National Park Service, through Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, in partnership with Lamar Community College and the non-profit group HistoriCorps, sponsored a hands-on field school for students this summer.  From July 14 to August 14, 2014, students from the college’s Historic Preservation Program worked with NPS staff to complete on-going preservation work on the fort.
