Local Missionary Ridge Resident Gary Higbee remembered a bronze marker that once dotted his property, but he could not remember its exact location. Not wanting this important Civil War story to be lost to future generations he approached the Friends of the Park, who were more than happy about his generous financial offer to replace the marker. After much research conducted by the park's resource manager, Jim Szyjkowski, the exact text, size, and style of the plaque was located and reproduced.

On November 21, 2011, a large crowd gathered at Bragg Reservation on Missionary Ridge to formally dedicate the new plaque to the 18th U.S. Infantry. Among those in attendance were U.S. Congressman Chuck Fleishmann, Colonel Butch Botters, a former commander of the U.S 18th, an honor guard and veterans from the U.S. 18th, and Missionary Ridge resident Gary Higbee. Park Superintendent Cathy Cook presided over the ceremony, noting the importance of returning this long-missing plaque to its rightful place in history.
