Information Management

The online ASMIS program helps track information about archeological sites for NPS.

Information management is key to any archeology project. Long after the last artifact is processed or the last excavation unit is documented and backfilled, information about artifact assemblages, features, and field notes need to be available for researchers. This task is managed with several programs – The Archeological Sites Management Information System (ASMIS) which records sites and their condition and the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) that manages information pertaining to artifacts, archives, and historical objects are two of the management systems used by the National Park Service (NPS). The National Register of Historic Places online database, administered by NPS, tracks information related to cultural resources that have been listed on the Register.
