Cleaning up after April snowstorm
April 1, 2006. Between March 31 and April 1 the southwest entrance received over 27 inches of snow. In this picture you can see our large rotary snow blower clearing out the parking area.

April 1, 2006. Here is the same snow blower as seen above clearing the walkway in a 15 foot island of snow.
Plowing at the Southwest
April 7, 2006. Those are large trucks next to the 15 foot snowdrifts found here, 500 feet beyond the southwest parking area.

April 7, 2006. A park ranger uses binoculars to record the snow depth at the southwest area. The depth recorded was 179 inches, or 1 inch shy of 15 feet.

April 12, 2006. A park ranger stands in front of the snow wall created during the plowing process. He is six feet tall. This picture was taken where the Main Park Road heads into the park from the southwest parking area.
Snowplows plow 15 foot drifts
April 17, 2006. Just 2 miles up the road from the Southwest parking area the snow is already 20 feet deep. Between April 14 and April 17 the park received 4 feet of new snow.
Sulphur Works knee-deep in snow.
April 18, 2006. The Sulphur Works area .9 miles north of the southwest entrance. The snowbanks on the left side of the road are 3-4 feet tall.
The snowload snapped these 4x4 railings.
May 2, 2006. The weight and movement of large masses of snow snapped these two 4x4 railings at the Sulphur Works.

May 2, 2006. This part of the road is near the first hairpin turn to the southwest of the Little Hot Springs Valley area. The park ranger in the photo is 5'5" tall.

May 30, 2006. A snow blower clears the Bumpass Hell parking area. The snow drifts on the right side of the picture are over 24 feet tall!

June 5, 2006. This picture was taken from Bumpass Mountain looking down onto the Main Park Road. You can see the road crew plowing the sharp turn heading towards Lassen Peak just past Lake Helen.

June 24, 2006. This picture was taken near the Terrace Lake Trailhead. The snow depth on the road at this location was 12 feet or more.
