Fire Management: Recovery Act Projects

Recovery Act logo

Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 has been provided to thin fire-prone stands of vegetation at various locations in Point Reyes National Seashore and Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This series of projects is designed to enhance wildfire protection for neighboring communities and park structures.

Crews accomplished substantial work between November 9 and December 18, 2009. Work will continue in 2010. This includes the following projects at Point Reyes National Seashore:

* Highway 1
* Bear Valley

Smaller non-native eucalyptus trees, 18 inches in diameter and less, and dead woody material resulting from Sudden Oak Death are being removed to reduce hazardous fuel.

See an example (265 KB PDF) of a past project before and after treatment.
