Your eyes aren't playing tricks on you when you look out over the bay and into the river. That water is red.

Notice the expanses of blood red water that start appearing in the waters of the Columbia River and Youngs Bay every summer ? What IS that stuff? Well, it's not blood, and it's not a "red tide." It is in fact an incredibly complicated and fascinating dance involving a tiny ciliate creature, Myrionecta rubra, and the photosynthetic algae that it devours and enslaves.

To find out what this all means, come to the next Nature Matters presentation Thursday, Oct 18th, when Dr. Curtis Roegner, of NOAA fisheries, will share his research on the topic. Discover what the red water is really made of, why it happens, and how it may affect life in the estuary.

Doors will open at 6 PM for those wanting to purchase beverages at the George before the free public event.  Fort George+Public House is located at 1438 Duane St. Astoria, OR.
