Saturday, February 23rd - 2:00 p.m. - Louisiana Native Guards

After the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in rebelling states, some joined the Union Army.  Did you know one regiment of these "Louisiana Native Guards" was stationed on Ship Island?  Side by side with soldiers from New England, guarding Confederate prisoners of war, the first African-American soldiers to see combat during the Civil War lived on Ship Island for nearly three years.  Join a park ranger to learn more about this fascinating story during our featured Black History Month program.
