Description

Timucuan Preserve is Jacksonville's national park! It provides thousands of acres of stopover habitat for birds as they migrate through the area. During spring migration, birds from around the world make Timucuan Preserve their temporary homes. To celebrate, Timucuan Preserve will host Migratory Bird Day on April 23, 2022, with special addition stickers, water coloring, videos, and hikes to help the community connect with the preserve and the birds that live here. Join us virtually on Facebook and our website: www.nps.gov/TIMU for new videos featuring nature artist, wildlife photographer, and ornithologist Isaiah “Ike” Scott from Ike’s Birding Hikes. He will also lead two bird hikes of Fort Caroline National Memorial on Migratory Bird Day.

Ike’s first hike at 10:00 am, Birds and the Gullah Geechee, will highlight historical connections between birds and people of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. Ike’s second Birding Hike at 1:00 pm will focus on nature journaling. Learn more about Isaiah’s passion for birds from his Instagram account @IkesBirdingHikes.

Ornithologist Marisa Martinez will lead a bird hike of the Spanish Pond Trail at 11:00 am. Spanish Pond is an exciting location to explore because of the mixture of wading birds and songbirds in the area.

New this year is a 7:00 pm Owl Prowl with National Park Service Rangers. Space is limited! Preregistration is required. Call Fort Caroline National Memorial at 904.641.7155 to reserve your spot for the Owl Prowl.

Our partner, Timucuan Parks Foundation, provided limited addition Migratory Bird Day stickers available for pick up at Fort Caroline National Memorial and Kingsley Plantation, while supplies last. All activities are free and open to the public.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for all hikes. Closed-toed shoes required. Water and bug spray highly recommended.
