Description
River Raisin National Battlefield Park will host a Wildlife Series program Saturday November 16th from 1-2pm featuring the sturgeon.
The program will take place at the Battlefield Visitor Center, 1403 E. Elm Ave, Monroe, MI 48162. The Wildlife Series is an exciting partnership between the River Raisin Institute and the Battlefield, through which local experts present upon the natural and cultural history of various native or invasive animals. This partnership seeks to highlight the interconnectedness between humans and other creatures in modern times, and life as it was lived during the War of 1812.
The sturgeon is a prehistoric fish once plentiful in the region. It is predicted that prior to over-harvesting in the late 1800s, about 1 million Lake Sturgeon called the Great Lakes region home. In fact, the original name bestowed upon the River Raisin by the Pottawatomi inhabitants was “River of Sturgeon,” or “Nu-ma-seppee” in their language. Regional reintroduction efforts have helped the population make a surprising comeback in recent years, highlighting the resilient nature of this incredible species. Ranger Jennie Braatz from the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge will speak about sturgeon adaptations, ecological needs, and how we can support the fish as it returns to local waterways.
