Description
Focusing on the Shawnee, Wyandots and their allies in the Ohio country, this panel explores the cooperation of Native Americans, African Americans, whites, and mixed-race individuals who assisted and provided sanctuary to enslaved persons escaping from bondage in the South.
The panel consists of three presenters. Roy Finkenbine, Director of the Black Abolitionist Archive at the University of Detroit Mercy, will explore the life of Caesar - a Virginia fugitive who escaped to the Ohio Country in 1774 – and his family. Diane Miller, National Coordinator of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, will take a broader look at the cooperation between runaway slaves and two Native American tribes in the Ohio Country and, after Indian Removal, in Kansas. Debra Robinson, English Faculty of Diné College, will present on the inter-relationships involving the Wyandottes, the Whetsel and the Zane families in and around Seneca County, Ohio.
