Piping Plover Day (East)

Fire Island National Seashore

Special Event
  • Mar 20, 2021 at 10:00 AM
  • Free

Celebrate International Earth Day and join the park rangers of the Fire Island National Seashore Resource Management team to assist in the set-up of “symbolic fencing” for the 2021 season. This is an opportunity to get your hands dirty while you help protect these Federally threatened/NY State endangered migratory shorebirds. You will learn about piping plover habitat and behavior while ensuring their nesting sites are not disturbed. Dress for the weather and for walking on sand; bring drinking water and a snack, and work gloves if you have them. Rain date Sunday March 21, 2021.

Register in advance for this event as space is limited to ensure safe social distancing. Participants will be asked to follow CDC and local public health guidelines for COVID-19. We ask the public to be our partner in recreating responsibly, by adopting social distancing practices and by wearing a face covering when social distancing cannot be maintained.
