Description

“That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free..." -President Abraham Lincoln, January 1, 1863

Join the National Park Service (NPS) for a special program to commemorate Juneteenth Day at the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington DC. The program will explore the complexities of emancipation across the United States during the Civil War, and will highlight congressional, presidential, military, and self-emancipation in the nation's capital. It will also feature a history of the memorial, the legacy of emancipation, and highlight individual stories.

The 1-hour program is free and open to the public. The program will be led by NPS staff from the Civil War Defenses of Washington and the National Mall and Memorial Parks.
