Description

Women at Hampton: Scientific Methods

As the National Parks celebrate women in science, this Family Program will focus on women's contributions in medicine and botany (the study of plants) here at Hampton.  Two women who lived here in the late 1800s will be the central focus.  Anne Davis Williams (1835-c.1890), who came to Hampton as an enslaved child and labored here into adulthood, was known to the Ridgely family as "Annie Bones" because of her skills in "bandaging and nursing."  Various Ridgely family members wrote about Anne's healing work and even about her funeral in Hampton's Great Hall.  Helen West Stewart Ridgely (1854-1929) was one of the Ridgely family who wrote about Anne.  Helen was an author, artist, historian, and civic leader, who also took courses on botany and made scientific observations of Maryland's native plants.  Her studies informed her extended work cultivating Hampton's renowned gardens.  This program will also touch on a broad array of responsibilities, special skills and knowledge that women at Hampton used on behalf of themselves, their families and their communities.

Program presenters will be curator Gregory Weidman, museum technician Melissa Miller, Ranger Emily, and EKO coordinator Laurel.

Children under 12 must be accompanied on the Zoom session by an adult.

No registration required.  This program is virtual and is open to anyone who would like to join (use Zoom information below).
