Description

Cowpens National Battlefield near Chesnee, SC will hold the annual Night before Kings Mountain dramatic vignette presented by the Overmountain Victory Trail Association on October 6th from 6:00– 7:00 pm. The outdoor program recounts the march that the overmountain men took to get to Kings Mountain in 1780. Early arrivers will be treated to  music and and a ranger  talk beginning at 5:30.

The march began on September 24, 1780 in Abingdon, Virginia. The men marched over the mountains looking for Major Patrick Ferguson and his provincial soldiers who had threatened to lay waste their land with fire and sword. On October 6, they met at a well-known pasturing area known as the Cow Pens, where they killed a couple of beeves and refreshed themselves. Early that night, the commanders selected about 1000 of the most fit, riding through the night in the rain to Kings Mountain, where they arrived about 3:00 the following afternoon.
