All About Columbian Mammoths

Columbian mammoths first appeared about 420,000 years ago. Ancient DNA tells us Columbian mammoths are a hybrid of Eurasian woolly mammoths, North American woolly mammoths, and an unknown type of mammoth found in Siberia. These animals traveled from Eurasia over the Bering Land Bridge and into North America, mixing with other species of mammoth along the way.
What did they look like? No one has found frozen mummies of Columbian mammoths, so less is known about them. Columbian mammoths were not adapted to extreme cold, and their fossils are found in the southern United States. On average, these animals were 3.7 to 4.3 meters (12 to 14 feet) tall at the shoulder and weight approximately 8,000 to 9000 kilograms (17600 to 19800 pounds).
