The Great Bridge Lock Park is in Chesapeake, Virginia and sits on a peninsula bordered by the Elizabeth River and the Albemarle & Chesapeake Canal. The park is named for the Corps of Engineers’ lock which separates the river and canal. The canal itself, opened in 1805, is a man-made waterway which connects the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia and Maryland and is the oldest continually operating man-made canal in the US.

The 19-acre park offers plenty of recreational opportunities for visitors, including boating, fishing, crabbing, picnicking and more. A boat ramp and floating dock also offers water access to the bodies of water.
