Flag Ponds Nature Park is a 500-acre nature park that extends along the shoreline of the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County, Maryland. Millions of years ago, sharks, whales, crocodiles, and other creatures inhabited the water and shores of the area. Though long extinct, their fossils are still preserved and can be found along the park’s shoreline. The park also preserves an original shanty which houses fishermen in the early 20th century and features exhibits on the region’s maritime heritage.
A short, half-mile hike brings you to the sandy beach or you may take longer trail routes that allow you to experience the beauty of the park and explore the extensive forests protecting the Chesapeake Bay shoreline. Additionally, there are observation platforms at two ponds and on the Chesapeake Bay and a visitor’s center with wildlife displays.
