The Crissy Field Center is known for its youth engagement programs, a partnership between Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and the National Park Service. These programs are designed to teach leadership skills on environmental topics to kids who typically have little experience in parks. Programs involve participants in the outdoors, lab projects and the classroom. The Crissy Field Center works with schools and community centers to offer field trip and camp opportunities at low or no cost to participants.
Green inside and out
With an infrastructure that's a certified LEED Platinum green building, the Crissy Field Center is green inside and out. The building's components were manufactured offsite, greatly reducing the amount of construction waste here at Crissy Field. During construction, contractors used an onsite solar generator that provided electricity for their tools.
Much of the Center is made up of creatively reused and re-purposed materials. More than 35% of the building is made of recycled content. This includes the steel frame (95% recycled), the light gauge steel walls, roof panels, ceiling tiles and carpet tiles (77% recycled). The raised flooring came from a Hewlett-Packard facility. The redwood siding is re-milled lumber salvaged from an old railway tunnel in Marin County.
