Discover the Park, One Mile at a Time

2016 marks the Centennial of the National Park Service and the 50th Anniversary of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. We are kicking off the celebration by launching the Hike-A-Hundred or Hike-Fifty Challenge. Anyone who hikes 50 or 100 miles in the park during the calendar year of 2016 will be eligible for a special prize.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has much to offer for hikers. Visitors can see spectacular views while hiking the Chapel - Mosquito Loop, traverse through the wilderness at Beaver Basin, walk to waterfalls, stroll on the beaches, or wander back in time to the Au Sable Lighthouse. There are many great options in the park, so lace up your boots and get out and have fun!

Start planning your hikes

Take a look at our online map, day hike handouts, backcountry mileage chart, and start planning your adventures for 2016. You can also pick up maps at the park visitor centers. You may hike any 50 or 100 miles of trails in the park. Your miles can include everything from our short nature trails to the longer backcountry trails. You may hike the same trail repeatedly or different trails. The goal is to inspire you to get out and explore and enjoy the park.

Every time you go out on the trail, whether you're by yourself, with friends, or doing work on the trail as a volunteer, keep track of those miles. They will add up fast! Click here to download a mileage log sheet to track your miles (or use your own).

To help you rack up some miles, look for and join ranger guided hikes this summer. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

Share your adventures with others on social media, #Hike50PRNL or #Hike100PRNL.

All miles must be completed by October 16, 2016. Once you've logged 50 or 100 miles, let us know. Send us a copy of your form by October 31, 2016; we will be sending prizes out in November. Mail to: Pictured Rocks NL, PO Box 40, Munising, MI 49862 or email us.

ALWAYS THINK SAFETY FIRST. Check the weather before heading out. Be careful on windy days. And stay back from cliff edges.
