Beginning on Monday, December 15, Pea Ridge National Military Park visitors will be rerouted to access the park from a temporary entrance via Old Liberty Road that is approximately 1 mile northeast of the current entrance. This is the latest phase of the Arkansas Highway Transportation’s important construction project on Highway 62 that will improve the safety of the park’s visitors once it is complete.Signs will be posted by Nabholz Construction that will clearly mark the temporary new access into the park to help safely direct traffic to and from the park.A new permanent entrance road into the park is under construction and should be finished in the next few months.
“We are excited about the improved safety and experience that our visitors will have once the construction of Highway 62 and our new entrance road is complete,” said Pea Ridge National Military Park Acting Superintendent Brenda Waters.
In addition to the construction of Highway 62, the park is in the final phase of the associated Highway 62 Mitigations Environmental Assessment (Hwy/EA) for Pea Ridge National Military Park, which is currently available for public review.
“The purpose of this mitigation project is to identify a safe and convenient access road and parking for our visitors at key features within the park, while at the same time protecting and preserving the cultural and natural resources. As a result of the relocation of Highway 62, a new access and improved circulation to the park is being proposed that will provide visitors additional opportunities to learn about the Civil War battle that occurred here,” said Superintendent Waters.
The public is invited to attend an Open House to learn more about the proposed new access and improved circulation in the park.It will be held on Friday, December 19, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Pea Ridge National Military Park Visitor Center, which is located at 15930 E Hwy 62 in Garfield, AR.
An electronic copy of the Highway 62 Mitigations Environmental Assessment is available for public review and can be accessed by going to our Planning, Environment and Public Comment website located at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectID=46500.In addition, a hard copy of the document is available at the Pea Ridge Library, 161 East Pickens Road, Pea Ridge, AR, and at the park’s Visitor Center.
