March 2016 Schedule

Tuesday, March 1, 2016: Einstein Day/Old Trails Hike with Ranger Kip—Hike Giant Logs Trail where Einstein traveled.


Friday March 4, 2016: Puerco Pueblo Walk—Join a ranger to explore remains of an ancestral Puebloan village. 0.3 mile (0.5km) easy walk on a paved loop. Immediately following, an additional 0.5 mile (0.8km) walk on a dirt road will occur for those interested in seeing additional park petroglyphs.

Saturday March 5, 2016: Arch Expo (Casa Grande Ruins) Join Ranger Kip Woolford at the Petrified Forest National Park booth.

Sunday March 6, 2016: Route 66 Hike

Sunday March 6, 2016: Stagecoach Stop Hike with park archæologist Bill Reitze. Meet at 10am at the Painted Desert Visitor Center. And drive to the beginning of the hike. Hike to a historic stagecoach stop and enjoy petroglyphs near and associated with the site. About 2 mi (3.2 km) round trip on varied, uneven terrain. Program is limited to 15 people and advanced signup is required. Allow about 3 hours.

Tuesday March 8, 2016: Night Sky Program with Ranger Kip Woolford at Pintado Point/Overnight Camping permitted!

10:00am Saturday March 12, 2016: Martha’s Butte Hike with Ranger Hallie Larsen—Join a ranger for a leisurely walk into the backcountry to explore and discover petroglyphs in this unique landscape. This is approximately a 2.5 mile hike over uneven terrain, but at a slow and easy pace. Wear appropriate footwear, bring water, and sun protection. Meet at the Rainbow Forest Museum at 10am before caravanning to the parking area at the “trail”head.

Sunday March 13, 2016: McCreery Pueblo Hike with park archæologist Bill Reitze. Meet at 10am at the Painted Desert Visitor Center before caravanning to the hike beginning. Hike to an impressive 800-year-old great kiva site, which is normally closed to the public. About 1.6 mi (2.4 km) round trip on varied, uneven terrain. Allow about 2 hours. The hike is limited to 15 people and advanced signup is required.

Immediately following, an additional 0.5 mile (0.8km) walk on a dirt road will occur for those interested in seeing additional park petroglyphs.

Saturday March 19, 2016: Go Fly a Kite with Ranger Hallie Larsen. Meet at the Rainbow Forest picnic area anytime between 1pm and 4pm. Bring your own kite or make a mini kite with the ranger on-site for free.

Wednesday March 23, 2016: Historic Route 66 Hike with park archæologist Bill Reitze. Meet at 10am at the Route 66 pullout (in the northern portion of park). Petrified Forest is the only national park with a portion of Route 66 inside its boundaries! Enjoy a 2 mi (3.2 km) round trip hike along the old roadbed of the Mother Road to learn about its history. Allow about 2 hours. No advanced signup required.

Wednesday March 23, 2016: Night Sky—Lunar Eclipse with Ranger Kip Woolford. Overnight camping permitted at Chinde Point.

Immediately following, an additional 0.5 mile (0.8km) walk on a dirt road will occur for those interested in seeing additional park petroglyphs.

Sunday March 27, 2016: Lacey Point Hike with park archæologist Bill Reitze. Meet at 10am at Lacey Point about 5 miles from the north entrance. Hike off-trail into the Painted Desert to discover some of the best petroglyphs in the park. Approximately 2.5 mi (4 km) round trip over varied, uneven terrain, and is considered moderately difficult. Allow about 3 hours. The hike is limited to 15 people and advanced signup is required.
