Among the recent additions to the museum in the newly opened Sunrise area is a section of a snag found in the region of Indian Bar by a trail crew that has been working in that district. On this snag, which was found about ten feet from the Wonderland trail, is an inscription bearing the name of Elcain Longmire and others, stating that they camped there in August of 1897.

This find is of interest because of the the fact that it was Elcain Longmire, who with his father, James Longmire, first staked out the claims in the Longmire area in 1883 and 1884 with the hope of establishing a mineral springs resort. It was also Elcain Longmire who in 1888 built the Longmire homestead cabin which still stands in the vicinity of Longmire, and serves as a monument to those hardy pioneers who preceded the present day visitors who now come to Mount Rainier National Park.
