Padre Island National Seashore Reduces Speed Limit

Superintendent Joe Escoto announced Padre Island National Seashore will implement a seasonal speed limit of 15 miles per hour from mile marker 0 to the Mansfield Channel effective from April 15 through July 5, 2011. This provision can be found in the 2010 Superintendent’s Compendium at https://www.nps.gov/pais/parkmgmt/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&PageID=437589. The seasonal speed limit reflects the speed limits of other beaches in the State of Texas and will assist in providing visitors a safe and enjoyable beach experience during the summer season, a popular time for recreational beach activities. Additionally, a reduction in the speed limit will facilitate the detection of sea turtle and nests and decrease the chances of injuring nesting sea turtles. Sea turtles cannot and will not move for an approaching vehicle.

The National Park Service is currently in the process of developing an Environmental Assessment to examine Beach Vehicle use on the beach. Once a final decision has been determined, the public will be notified of any changes in rules and regulations which will be implemented immediately, superseding the seasonal

speed limit as outlined in the 2010 Superintendent’s Compendium.
