Living history

Come see demonstrations of U.S.-Mexican War era weapons, tactics, and soldier life. Program includes live musket and artillery demonstrations. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the living historians. Living history programs are dependent upon weather.

Events, tours, & programs

Palo Alto Battlefield hosts a variety of programs and events throughout the year. All park events and programs are always free of charge. You can download a copy of our program schedule (PDF 1.11 MB) for your convenience.

Rio Grande Delta International Archaeology Fair

Our annual Rio Grande Delta International Archaeology Fair is typically held in early October. The fair gives you a chance to learn about archaeology, local archaeological resources, and preservation. See exhibits by professional and avocational archaeologist and local museums from both sides of the border. The fair features educational games and activities for visitors of all ages. Memorial Illumination

Our annual illumination event is typically held mid-November. The event begins at 4 p.m. with living history programs. The memorial program begins at 5 p.m with a short ceremony held to remember veterans of the opening battles of the war. Luminaria lighting follows at sunset.

The public is invited to bring a grill lighter and participate in the lighting. Visitors over the age of 12 can assist with the lighting. See our calendar for exact date and time information.

Ranger walks (Dec. 1st to Mar. 31st)

Palo Alto Battlefield

Tour the battlefield and learn extra details about the causes of war, why a battle occurred at Palo Alto, and how the clash developed. Tours at Palo Alto are on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Tours on Sundays are at 2 p.m. Tour length varies.

Resaca de la Palma Battlefield

Palo Alto Battlefield offers guided tours of the Resaca de la Palma Battlefield Unit. Tour the site of the second major battle of the U.S.-Mexican War and learn extra details about the causes of war, why a battle occurred here, and how the clash developed.

Tours at Resaca de la Palma are on Thursdays at 2 p.m. Tours of the site are by appointment only. The site is located at 1024 Paredes Line Road.

Those interested should call the park and make a reservation at least one day in advance. To reserve a tour, call the front desk at (956) 541-2785 x333.

Fort Brown Earthwork

Palo Alto Battlefield also offers programs at the Fort Brown earthworks. Programs at the site are on Tuesdays at 11 a.m and are by appointment only. Those interested in a program should call the park and make a reservation at least one day in advance.

To reserve a program, call the front desk at (956) 541-2785 x333. The Fort Brown earthwork is located at 300 River Levee Road, behind the UTRGV campus.
