Alt Text Two maps of the Battle of Abercromby 1797 as part of San Juan National Historic Site in Puerto Rico. San Juan Bay is depicted in pale blue cutting into the coast of Puerto Rico, depicted in white, stretching along the bottom edge of the map. Red and blue arrows swoop and hook through landmarks labeled in blue and red. Extended Description First Map A black X on the far east side marks the location of “English fleet anchorage, 17-22 April,” near Cangrejos Point. Three red lines run west from here. One line runs to a black X at the center of the map off the coast of El Morro: “English blockade harbor, 17 April-1 May.” It continues west as two arrows, hooking down and east around Cabras Island. The broader hook points along the mainland: “English search unsuccessfully for a second landing, April 20.” The inside hook points to Cabras Island. A second line runs south into Puerto Rico: “English landing, 18 April.” It continues, forking into two arrows, one that runs south past a note in blue text that reads “Spanish abandon positions, 18 April,” to Martin Peña Bridge, “captured by English, 18 April.” The other branch swoops west to San Antonio Bridge and Battery. A blue zig-zag line runs from San Antonio Battery past San Geronimo Battery to Escambrón Battery labeled “First defense line.” The third line swoops north and west to a black X in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean near the top of the map: “English fleet anchorage, 23-30 April.” Second Map A blue line runs north from the bottom edge of the map to Martin Peña Bridge, “retaken by Spanish, 21 April.” Two blue arrows sprout from the bridge. One runs west toward San Juan Bay. The other runs north, with the note “Spanish counterattacks, 29-30 April,” meeting two more blue arrows. They all point to the outbound red line, one running west from off the right side of the map, and the other running east from San Antonio Bridge with a note: “Spanish raid takes prisoners, 24 April.” The red outbound line reads “English fleet returns to pick up troops, 1 May.” The western blue arrow swoops from San Antonio Bridge and Battery, near a short blue arrow that reads “Spanish artillery destroys English batteries, 21-28 April,” amongst small red squares that read “English move cannons to island, 25 April,” and past a note that reads “Spanish raid takes prisoners, 24 April,” before it meets the outbound red line. Two red lines run from a black X in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean reading “English fleet anchorage, 23-30 April,” and a black X off the coast of El Morro reading “English blockade ends, 30 April,” and connect near Escambrón Battery, and continue all the way east and off the map, with a note that reads “English fleet departs, 1 May.” Legend A scale in the bottom left corner of the second map measures distances of 1 kilometer and 1 mile. Blue text under that reads, “Spanish positions and movements shown in BLUE” and red text reads, “English positions and movements shown in RED.”
