Alt Text Map of Kalaupapa National Historical Park along a western, oceanside coast in Hawaii. A grid of streets is shown in white against a tan background, and a couple dozen sites are identified and labeled in green or in gray and black. Extended Description The Kalaupapa Settlement is anchored by three main roads. First, Kamehameha Street reaches into the map from the top edge and serves as the main north-south thoroughfare through the settlement. Second is Damien Road, which forks off Kamehameha Street on the north side of town. Damien Road continues first down the coast and then curves east before ultimately ending at Kapiolani Street to the east. Third, Beretania Street travels east from Damien Road, across the settlement, past Kapiolani Street, and off the right edge of the map. Kamehameha Street extends off the top edge of the map to reach an airport. The street passes cemeteries along the coast near the top of the map before entering the settlement, passing the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon) on its way. Kamehameha Street becomes Puahi Street south of Beretania Street, and Puahi Street continues south of town past a Bar, Park Headquarters, Hospital Ruins, Mother Marianne Cope Monument and former Gravesite, Father Damien Monument, Bishop Home for Girls (historic), Kenso Seki’s House, and Olivia Breitha’s House. Puahi Street meets the Trailhead for Kalaupapa Trail south of the settlement and then continues to the New Baldwin Home for Boys to the south. A note next to the trail reads “Trail to ‘Topside’ Molokaʻi.” Beretania Road travels east from near the northern end of Damien Road to pass the St. Francis Church, a Store, Lions Den/Post Office, State Department of Heath Headquarters, Craft Store, Old Stone Church/Fire Station, Paschoal Hall, an Athletic Fields Site, and Bandstand site. Outside of the settlement, text near the right edge of the map indicates that Beretania Road continues “To Kauhakō Crater, Silama Church, St. Philomena Church, Old Baldwin Home for Boys, and Kalawa Settlement.” Staff Row runs north from Beretania Street to access the Nurses’ Quarters (historic), Superintendent’s House (historic), Dentist’s House (historic), Doctor’s House (historic), McVeigh Home (historic), Ed Kato’s Studio, and Social Hall. The Hale Malama Museum Collections Storage Facility is east of Staff Row and north of Paschoal Hall. School Street also travels east from Damien Road one block south of Beretania Street. School Street passes Wilcox Hall and Kanaʻana Hou United Church of Christ. West of Damien Road and along the coast are Kalaupapa Landing, a Warehouse (historic), Visitors’ Quarters (historic), Long House (historic), Care Home, Wilcox Memorial Building (historic), and Bay View Home (historic). Two sites are on Baldwin Street, which travels north from the eastern end of Damien Road. These are Bernard Punikaiʻa’s House and Americans of Japanese Ancestry Hall (historic) and Bookstore. Legend A scale at the bottom edge of the map measures distances of 500 meters and 1,000 feet.
