Alt Text Map of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Tennessee and Georgia. Park areas are shaded pale green, and winding rivers and creeks are blue. The surrounding mountains and valleys are gray. Extended Description The park is composed of two large battlefields and a handful of several other smaller points, monuments, and sites dotted around Chattanooga. Lookout Mountain Battlefield lies across the Tennessee-Georgia border in the middle of the map, mostly on the northwest side of Lookout Mountain with a triangular section on the east side of the mountain. Chickamauga Battlefield is in Georgia, southeast of the Missionary Ridge which spans the two states, parallel to Lookout Mountain. The Tennessee River winds across the top half of the map, curving down near Lookout Mountain, then up and over Chattanooga and off the top right corner of the map. Several roads are overlaid across the area, and the map shows the suggested driving route between park areas as a black line with a white outline. This description will start from the left on Interstate 24 and go into Lookout Mountain Battlefield, then will follow the suggested driving routes to the other park areas in a roughly counterclockwise direction. A transcription of the legend will follow. Lookout Mountain Battlefield From the left middle edge of the map, Interstate 24 crosses the state line into Tennessee. Text on the map’s left side reads “To Nashville and Interstate 59.” Interstate 24 curves above Lookout Mountain Battlefield, with the Tennessee River hugging the other side, then passes through the south side of Chattanooga and off the right edge of the map. Exits 174 and 175 from Interstate 24 lead to Lookout Mountain Battlefield. Exit 174 leads to Cummings Highway, also labeled US Highways 41, 72, 64, and 11, leading to several entry points for the park area. Exit 175 leads to Browns Ferry Road, which intersects with Cummings Highway. On the other side of that highway the road is the Wauhatchie Pike, which leads to the Battle of Wauhatchie Site (New York Monument). Heading into the park from the top, Garden Road leads to the Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center on the northwest side of the park. Lookout Creek runs down the length of the battlefield near here. The roads above the park curve around Eagles Nest Monument, then through the eastern section of the battlefield down the mountain’s east side, along the Scenic Highway, also labeled State Road 148. An offshoot from this road takes us to Cravens House via Cravens Terrace. About a third of the way down Scenic Highway, East Brow Road heads back north to Point Park. Text here notes “detail map above.” East Brow Road runs along the west side of the mountain past Sunset Rock monument, then reconnects to State Route 148, which continues toward the state line. On the Georgia side, Scenic Highway is also jointly labeled State Routes 157 and 189, and from there Frontier Bluff Road takes us past Covenant College and into the park area. McFarland Road (also State Route 157) crosses the mountain, leading to Red Riding Hood Trail, which continues back up the eastern triangle of the park, leading back to the Scenic Highway and the suggested route to other park areas. Chickamauga Battlefield Taking the Scenic Highway/suggested route out of the park, the road goes southeast, then connects to St. Elmo Avenue (also State Route 17) which goes south and becomes State Route 193 after crossing into Georgia. State Route 2, also called Battlefield Parkway, leads east over the Missionary Ridge and to LaFayette Road, which travels south into the battlefield. After the Visitor Center and a picnic area near the entrance, a tour route begins a loop around the park. Throughout the park, dozens of state monuments and mortuary monuments cover the area. The tour makes eight stops for the monuments as well as at Brotherton Cabin, which is stop 4, Wilder Brigade Monument at stop 6, and Snodgrass House at stop 8. There are additional picnic areas and a recreation field in this area. Park Areas Around Chattanooga Taking the suggested route back up out of the battlefield, LaFayette Road becomes US Highway 27. Near the state border, the road forks, and the left leg crosses with West Crest Road for the Iowa Reservation park area. US Highway 27 continues north into Chattanooga, crossing Interstate 24 at Exit 180B. From there, the suggested route takes us down Holtzclaw Avenue, which passes by the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Then the path goes east on Bailey Avenue and north up Orchard Knob Avenue, to Orchard Knob near the intersection with East Third Street. Northwest up Interstate 24, US Highway 27 reconnects on the west edge of Chattanooga, crossing the Tennessee River. The suggested route takes us west on Manufacturers Road, then Hamm Road, then down Moccasin Bend Road to the Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District part of the park, which is under development. Heading back up US Highway 27, the suggested route takes an offshoot west, to US Highway 127 (also Signal Mountain Boulevard), which leads to the Signal Point park area near the top left corner of the map. Back in Georgia near the state line, the other branch off of US Highway 27 goes to South Crest Road, which travels along the spine of Missionary Ridge. It passes by Bragg Reservation, near Interstate 24, and then the Ohio Reservation, after which point the road is North Crest Road. Continuing up, it passes the Turchin Reservation, De Long Reservation, Phelps Monument, 73rd Pennsylvania Reservation, and finally Sherman Reservation. Legend In the bottom right corner of the map, the legend reads as follows: Picnic table symbol for Picnic area, Green circle with a white number 1 for Tour Stop, Green line for Tour Route, Black line encased in white for Suggested driving route between park areas, Larger black triangle with larger text for State monument, and Smaller black triangle with smaller text for Mortuary monument. A scale below shows distances of 0.5 and 1 kilometer and 0.5 and 1 mile.
