Alt Text Map of Boston African American National Historic Site in Massachusetts. A blue line creates a path through the streets of Beacon Hill past Black Heritage sites represented with blue triangles. The streets are otherwise shown in white across tan-colored city blocks. Extended Description The long, trapezoidal Boston Common, shown in green, reaches into the map from the lower left corner. The common is bordered by Charles Street to the west, Beacon Street to the north, Park Street at the narrow end to the east, and Tremont Street to the south. A public garden is in the lower left corner, and underground parking, shown as a gray square, is across Charles Street under the common. East of that is the bean-shaped Frog Pond. A Rapid Transit Stop for the Red and Green Lines is near the corner of Park and Tremont streets, in the lower right corner of the map. A red pathway labeled the Freedom Trail begins at a black square representing Visitor Information along Tremont Street. The Freedom Trail travels across the park to pass the Robert Gould Shaw/54th Massachusetts Regiment Memorial at the corner of Beacon and Park streets. One leg of the Freedom Trail continues to the State House, which is represented in purple across Beacon Street. Another leg of the trail hooks back along Park Street to pass the Park Street Church, shown in purple, and Granary Burying Ground, shown in yellow, near the intersection of Tremont Street. The Boston Athenaeum, also purple, is on the northern side of the burying ground on Beacon Street. The blue Black Heritage Trail extends from the Freedom Trail near the Shaw/54th Massachusetts Memorial to cross Beacon Street in front of the State House. From there the blue trail turns onto Joy Street for two blocks. After a left onto Pinckney Street, the path passes the heritage sites of the George Middleton House and John J. Smith House and the long, thin Louisburg Square, which is shown in green. The heritage trail jogs south for a block on Cedar Lane Way before turning onto Mt Vernon Street and then almost immediately onto Charles Street. The heritage site Charles Street Meeting House is at the corner of Charles and Mt Vernon streets. The path zigzags for a couple blocks before passing the heritage sites of Lewis and Harriet Hayden House and the John Coburn House. The path creates almost a square around Irving Street, Cambridge Street, and Joy Street before ending on the short Smith Court, where three heritage sites are clustered: the Abiel Smith School, Smith Court Residences, and African Meeting House. Other buildings around Beacon Hill shown in purple include the Vilna Shul on Phillips Street, Saltonstall State Office Building three blocks east of Joy Street, and Harrison Gray Otis House just north of the intersection of Cambridge and Joy streets. Three Rapid Transit stops on the Red Line are in the top left corner, and one of those is labeled Charles/MGH. Bowdoin, a stop on the Blue Line, is in the upper right corner. Legend A scale under the map in the left corner measures distances of 0.1 and 0.2 miles. The legend reads as follows: Blue line for Black Heritage Trail, Blue triangle for Black Heritage site, and Gray letter T in a white circle against blue and green lines for Rapid Transit stop.
