Alt Text Map of Reconstruction Era National Historical Park in South Carolina. Five sites are labeled in green against the tan land. Bodies of water are shown in blue, and roads are represented with yellow lines. Extended Description The park is located on a series of islands that together make a bulb shape bordered by the Broad River to the west, the Coosaw River to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The Beaufort River, Morgan River, Harbor River, and unnamed streams and creeks wind through the park islands, carving ever-smaller pieces of land. US Route 21, also labeled Sea Islands Parkway, drops from near the top left corner of the map, turns east past the town of Beaufort, and then reaches to the eastern end of the islands. US Route 21 continues “To US Route 17 and Interstate 95.” Another road creates a U-shaped circuit just west of Beaufort. Ladys Island Drive connects the right leg of the U, which passes Port Royal, to Sea Islands Parkway. All three roads described so far are shown as yellow lines. Ladys Island Drive continues as a white line labeled State Route 802 north to the Coosaw River. Also represented as a white line, State Route 170 branches southwest off of US Route 21 from the middle of the U shape and travels across the Broad River and off the left edge of the map. Port Royal Island lines the southwest edge of the collection of islands making up the heart of this map. Parris Island is farther south between the Beaufort River and the Port Royal Sound, which also meets the Broad River. Port Royal, Cat Island, Ladys Island, and St. Helena Island create a band moving east to the Harbor River. From the top down, a diagonal strip of islands east of the Harbor River are Hunting, Fripp, Pritchards, St. Phillips, and Bay Point islands. Coosaw and Morgan Island are north of Morgan River. Southwest of the Broad River are Lemon Island and Daws Island, which are separated from Spring Island by the Chechesse River. Collagen River winds around the lower lobe of Spring Island, and Hilton Head Island is at the bottom of the map below Port Royal Sound. Reconstruction Era National Historical Park Visitor Center is labeled with a green callout box in Beaufort. Other sites labeled the same way are Camp Saxon on the coastline of the Beaufort River south of Ladys Island Drive and Penn Center, a rectangle on St. Helena Island near Ladys Island. Two sites are labeled in Penn Center: Brick Baptist Church and Darrah Hall. Legend A scale in the lower right corner of the map measures distances of 5 kilometers and 5 miles.
