Alt Text Map of Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota. The park is outlined in green and shaded a darker tan than the surrounding terrain. Paved roads and highways are represented by red lines, unpaved roads by white lines, and trails by dashed green lines. Extended Description Wind Cave National Park is roughly trapezoidal in shape with a deeply stepped long side facing southeast. The park is surrounded by Black Hills National Forest except along the northern border, which it shares with Custer State Park. State Route 87 drops into the park near the upper left corner and passes two pullouts, Lookout Tower at an elevation of 5,013 feet (1,528 meters), Rankin Ridge Trail, and two more pullouts before reaching a note in red text near Reaves Gulch reads, “14.5 ft maximum height for bridge underpass.” State Route 87 continues south past three more pullouts, then ends at US Route 385, which angles into the western edge of the park about halfway down its height. US Route 385 travels southeast and then angles sharply southwest before curving back southeast and continuing out the park’s southern boundary, passing various pullouts along its length. A park road connects these two angled sections of US Route 385 and leads to the Visitor Center, which has information, parking, and restrooms. The Elevator Building is near the visitor center. Prairie Vista Trail, with a picnic area, is slightly north of the visitor center, and closer to the intersection of US Route 385 and the park road, a spur leads west to Elk Mountain Campground, which has an amphitheater and the Elk Mountain Trail. More trails travel east into the heart of the park, including the Sanctuary, Centennial, Highland Creek, and Lookout Point trails in the northern half that extend away from State Route 86. In the southern half, Wind Cave Canyon Trail departs from a pullout at the tip of the angled section of US Route 385 and connects with Highland Creek Trail and East Bison Flats Trail. Cold Brook Canyon Trail travels west from near the southern border of the park. County Roads 5 and 6 create a Y shape in the eastern half of the park. Lone Pine Overlook is on County Road 5 and Boland Ridge Trail travels east from County Road 6. Country Road 5 continues south beyond the Windcave National Park border to become Red Valley Road and intersect with Country Road 101 and 7-11, which runs west along Martin Valley and east along Beaver Creek. Country Road 101 and 7-11 intersects SR 79 at the southeast corner of the map at Mile Marker 35. SR 79 runs north to Rapid City. Text at the top edge of the map indicates that State Route 87 continues “To Custer and Mount Rushmore National Memorial.” US Route 385 travels west “To Custer, Jewel Cave National Monument (NM), and Mount Rushmore National Memorial” off the left edge, and “To Hot Springs” off the bottom edge of the map.
