Alt Text Map of Camp Nelson National Monument in Kentucky. The park is shown in dark green and the surrounding areas in fainter green. Camp Nelson National Cemetery is shaded yellow, and the Kentucky River and Hickman Creek are represented in blue. Ten sites are numbered across the map, both in and outside of the park. Extended Description This description will begin at the top of the park and work down and then continue to the surrounding areas. The locations of the 10 numbered sites jump back and forth, so following that order would mean backtracking and redundancy. The Park and Cemetery The Camp Nelson National Monument grounds are roughly square but the east and west edges flare slightly outward, and the east side flickers in and out like ruffles. A notch, Camp Nelson National Cemetery, creates a gap along the bottom edge. The Visitor Center is near the top left corner of the park off Danville Loop 2 Road, which borders the park to the west and comes to a dead end near the southwest corner. A park road branches off the loop road and leads to parking. Near the Visitor Center are a site labeled White House, Barracks (reconstructed), the Depot Trail, and Barracks Loop Trail. An orange flag symbol is near number 8, Prison. Four forts spaced fairly evenly across the top of the park are marked with yellow flag icons. From left to right, these are Fort Jackson, Fort Putnam, Fort Pope, Fort Taylor, and Fort McKee. Also in this area are the Northern Fortification Line, which is “only visible in some areas,” Graveyard No. 1 Monument, Putnam Loop Trail, McKee Loop Trail, Long Fort Trail, and a blue flag icon near Shed and Stables. Continuing around the eastern edge of the park are Fort Jones, North Stone Wall with an overlook, South Stone Wall with an overlook, Fort Jones Overlook Trail, and Hickman Spur Trail. Distances are given for each leg of each trail around the park in red text. A point where the Hickman Spur Trail meets the southern edge of the park is labeled in dark red text reading “No access to cemetery” in all caps. The remaining sites are in the bottom left quadrant of the park, with a white flag icon indicating Warehouses, blue flag with Quartermaster Office, red flag with Government Shops, which is also numbered 1, and a green flag with the Bakery, number 9. Numbers 6 and 7 are closer to the southwest edge of the park. South of this, the Camp Nelson Cemetery Road runs alongside the property and then enters the cemetery at three points before the road ends in a loop. Surrounding Areas State Route 27 runs at a shallow diagonal near the west edge of the park. Text at the top edge of the map reads “To Nicholasville and Lexington” and at the bottom edge “To Danville and Lancaster.” Near the lower left corner of the map, Hall Road travels east, turning into Old Danville Road after it crosses State Route 27. Number 2 is near the intersection of US Route 27 and Hall Road. Traveling west on Hall Road leads to a green site with the Fee Memorial Church inside. Just northwest of this are numbers 3, 4, and 5 near the Home for Colored Refugees site. Number 10 is near the southern end of the Kentucky River, represented by a single hairpin turn in the course of the river. Hickman Creek winds down the right side of the map, and State Route 1298, also labeled Sugar Creek Pike, travels south to cross the creek, and then veer off the right edge. Legend A legend near the bottom left corner reads as follows: P icon for Parking, Thin red triangle next to numbers for Distance indictor, Dark green for Camp Nelson National Monument, Green dashed line for Trail, and Flag icon for Historic Site (flag colors matches color on ground). A scale below measures distances of 0.25 kilometers and 0.25 miles.
