Alt Text Map of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in Colorado. The park, shown in green, is blocky with stepped borders against a pearly white topographic terrain. Extended Description The Visitor Center, which has a picnic area in the middle of the park, is next to the Petrified Forest Loop and the Geologic Trail that branches off the loop to head northeast. Both are self-guiding trails. Moving clockwise around the park are Hornbek Homestead at noon, Ancient Lake Florissant at one o’clock, and Twin Rock Trail, Shootin’ Star Trail, and Barksdale, which has a picnic area, between one and three o’clock. Lower Twin Rock Road cuts across the bottom right corner of the park and ends at Local Road 1, which cuts almost vertically through the park. Continuing up the left side of the clock are Sawmill Trail, Hans Loop, the self-guiding Ponderosa Loop, and Boulder Creek Trail between six and nine o’clock. In the final quarter, Hornbek Trail leads up to Hornbek Homestead at noon. Grape Creek enters the park near the northwest corner and curves down into the southeast quadrant. The park is surrounded by other sites labeled Ancient Lake Florissant. The town of Florissant is at the intersection of Local Road 1 and US Route 24, which crosses the map north of the park. Legend A scale in the lower right corner of the map measures distances of 0.5 kilometers and 0.5 miles. A legend in the lower left corner reads as follows: Picnic table for Picnic area, Gray solid line for Unpaved road, Black dashed line for Hiking trail, and Black dashed line encased in yellow for Self-guiding trail.
