Alt Text Map of the tour route in Petersburg National Battlefield in Virginia. The tour route stretches from the James River in the city of Petersburg to the east to Courthouse Road to the west and is represented by a thick green line. The rest of the map is tan and yellow with gray lines representing highways. Extended Description The tour of the park starts at Grant’s Headquarters at City Point along the James River. The Appomattox Plantation and Grant’s Cabin are also at City Point. From there, the tour heads west, taking Cedar Lane to Appomattox Street, Randolph Road, 6th Avenue, and finally onto State Highway 156. The highway goes past Fort Lee into the first area with numbered tour stops, the Eastern Front. Eight tour stops here are shown in blue circles reaching from the Eastern Front Visitor Center to a site labeled The Crater. From the Eastern Front area, the tour continues left along Crater Road to Flank Road before arriving in the Western Front at the Western Front Visitor Center next to the Poplar Grove National Cemetery. There are four tour stops numbered 1-4 in red circles in this area. The first is on State Highway 676, the second is on Vaughan Road, the third is on State Highway 672, and the fourth is on Simpson Road by Fort Gregg and Fort Whitworth. From the Western Front area, the tour continues left, taking US Highway 1 to State Highway 613 until it arrives in the Five Forks Battlefield area. There are five green tour stops in this area. The Five Forks Battlefield Visitor Contact Station and the first tour stop sit along Courthouse Road. The second, third, and fourth stops are on State Highway 613, and the fifth stop is along Courthouse Road. Far north of Petersburg are three other landmarks of note in Richmond National Battlefield Park: Parker’s Battery along Hundred Road, Fort Harrison along Hoke-Brady Road, and Drewry’s Bluff on the James River. Legend In the lower right corner of the map is a scale that measures 1 and 2 kilometers and 1 and 2 miles. Below the scale a note reads, “Features from the time of the battles are shown in LIGHT GREEN. Some of these features still exist; others are sites only.” The text reading “light green” is printed in light green. The legend continues as follows: Green line for Tour route connecting park areas, Number in blue circle for Eastern Front tour stop, Number in red circle for Western Front tour stop, Number in green circle for Five Forks tour stop, Green notched line for Historic railroad, Red line with red label for Site of Confederate fortifications, and Blue line with blue label for Site of Union fortifications.
