Alt Text Map of Salem Maritime National Historic Site and surrounding areas in Massachusetts. The jagged coastline cuts into and curves around Salem, Beverly, and Marblehead. The land is shown in tan, water in blue, and park areas in green. Extended Description Hundreds of streets and sites are labeled on the land, which takes up about three quarters of the map. Near the center of the map, Salem has the highest density of buildings and sites. This description will begin there and then move to the surrounding areas. Two inset maps, one in each upper corner, will then be described before a full transcription of the legend. Salem Two arms flare northeast from the main body of Salem on either side of Collins Harbor. Sites make a thick band across the main body below. Near the west edge of this band, the roughly square McIntire Historic District is shaded in yellow and structures are represented in brown. Moving clockwise around that area are the Pierce-Nichols House at one o’clock and, between two and three, the Jonathan Corwin House (The Witch House), First Church in Salem, Ropes Mansion, and Nathaniel Bowditch House. Driver Park, shown in green, is edged by the east-west running Essex Street and north-south by North Street, which turns into Summer Street. The Salem Athenaeum is at about three o’clock, followed by Chestnut Street Park and Hamilton Hall between three and five. The Pickering House is just outside the yellow-shaded area at six o’clock. The Phillips House Museum is at eight o’clock and the Bertram-Waters House/Salem Library is at nine. Moving east of the historic district, the Salem YMCA, West Cogswell House (The Salem Inn), Gedney House, Cox House, and High Street Park are just across North and Summer streets. The next major north-south running road is Washington Street. A Zagster Bike Share, the Bewitched statue, and Riley Park are on the west side of the street and the Salem Lyceum site, Salem City Hall, Daniel Low Building, and another Zagster Bike Share are along the west side of Washington Street. The Essex Street Pedestrian Mall, a street shown in brown instead of the white of surrounding roads, extends east from Washington Street between the city hall and the Daniel Low Building. North of the mall are St. Peters Episcopal Church and the Museum Place Mall Garage. South of the mall are Old Town Hall, the Peabody Essex Museum, which is rendered in three dimensions, Salem Witch Trial Memorial, and Charter Street Cemetery. A yellow path labeled “Walking routes: Visitor Center to Salem Maritime National Historic Site” extends from the west end of the mall path. Essex Street, shown in yellow, curves from a building shown in perspective alongside Armory Park to pass the John Ward House, Gardner-Pingree House, and Hawthorne Hotel, also rendered in perspective, before ending at the Narbonne House. Hawthorne Boulevard, also in yellow, stretches south from Essex Street to pass the Nathanial Hawthorne statue and the Saint Matthew statue. The yellow path turns east onto Derby Street into an area marked in green and labeled Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Structures in the green area include the US Custom House, Scale House, Hawkes House, Derby House, and West India Good Store. A green section stretches north from the Hawkes House to connect to the Narbonne House on Essex Street. South of Derby Street and still in the green area are the Waite & Peirce Store, Pedrick Store House (Sail Loft), Friendship of Salem, Central Wharf, Derby Wharf, and, at the end of Derby Wharf, a Light Station. Dashed green lines run the length of the wharfs and connect Hawkes and Narbonne houses. The St. Joseph Hall is outside but next to the green area, and the House of Seven Gables is four blocks east near the Brewer Hawthorne Cove Marina. Sites north of this main section of Salem include the Howard Street Cemetery, Joseph Story House, the triangular Salem Common, which has a Bandstand, and the Roger Conant statue. Two arms reach northeast on either side of Collins Cove. Sites on the western arm include Curtis Park, Remond Park, and two sections of a bike trail represented as a dotted red line. The main section is a T shape. The crossbar parallels the western coast of this arm and the leg of the T extends east toward the second arm, Salem Neck. Another L-shaped section of the trail frames Curtis Park. The Essex Bridge and MBTA Commuter Rail cross the Danvers River to reach Beverly, which dips down into the map from the top edge alongside Beverly Harbor. Moving from north to south down Salem Neck are a fishing pier, Willows Beach, Salem Willows Park, Dead Horse Beach, Camp Naumkeag, Salem Neck, Columbus Square, Salem State University Aquaculture Center, the Wastewater Treatment Plant, Footprint Power Salem Harbor Station, Bentley Academy, Memorial Park, and Beattie Park. A peninsula that angles south off this arm is Winter Island, which is separated from the arm with Smith Pool and Cat Cover. Sites on the island are Winter Island Park, Fort Pickering, and Fort Pickering Lighthouse. On the southeast coast of this arm are the Salem Wharf, Salem Ferry Terminal, Brewer Hawthorne Cove Marina, and a Zagster Bike Share. The Boston Ferry and Bakers Island Boat Tour extends off the terminal and curves gently northeast before fading into the blue water of the South Channel. The Marblehead Rail-Trail continues south of the cove through Chadwick Lead Mills Park, Wyman Woods, and into the heart of Marblehead, which is across Salem Harbor in the lower right quadrant. The trail passes by Tower School and Malcolm Bell School. Another leg of the trail runs north-south from the bottom edge of the map to meet the first branch.
