Alt Text Map titled Skirmish at Salt River Bay, 1493 as it relates to Christiansted National Historic Site in the Virgin Islands. The tooth-shaped Salt River Bay cuts into the northern coastline of Santa Cruz (Saint Croix). Terrain is shown in beige and the Caribbean Sea in blue. Extended Description Sugar Bay and Triton Bay reach south from the main body of Salt River Bay like roots. Labeled in red, a Carib village is on the west side of the opening of Salt River Bay. A reef curves around the village a short distance out into the sea. Just beyond the reef here, three boats shown and labeled in blue are identified as Columbus’s fleet. The land on the other side of the bay is labeled Cabo de Las Flechas, and that area is lined with reefs. On the north side of the reefs, a single red symbol represents a Carib canoe. A nearby black X marks the “Estimated site of skirmish.” The inner, bay-side coastline of that area is marked with blue dashed lines to show today’s shoreline. Legend A scale in the lower left corner of the map measures distances of 0.5 kilometers and 0.5 miles.
