Alt Text Map of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park that encompasses portions of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. The park is shown in muted green, the surrounding terrain in shimmering tan, and roads as red or black lines. Extended Description The long, relatively thin Cumberland Gap National Historical Park angles from the lower left corner of the map up to the center of the right edge. Kentucky lies along the far side of the ridge. Tennessee abuts the state line along the Cumberland Mountain ridge for the western third and Virginia meets Kentucky along the eastern two thirds. The town of Middlesboro, which has an airport, is shown in yellow near the lower left corner of the map. The Visitor Center is near the base of the mountain next to Middlesboro. There are picnic tables near there and at nearby Bartlett Park Headquarters. US Route 25E travels down from the top edge of the map to cross Middlesboro, past the visitor center, and continues through the Cumberland Gap Tunnel and out the other side. The Cumberland Trail runs along the ridge of Cumberland Mountain and over the tunnel. The town of Tiprell, Lincoln Memorial University and Abraham Lincoln University near Harrogate and Shawanee are outside park limits southeast of Middlesboro and the visitor center. After exiting the tunnel, US Route 25E angles south and continues off the bottom edge of the map near a note reading “To Tazewell, Interstate 81, Knoxville, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.” State Route 63 branches off US Route 25E to travel southwest and off the map “To LaFollette and Interstate 75.” Part of the tunnel runs alongside Cumberland Gap, which is also shaded in yellow. A site nearby is also labeled Cumberland Gap, which is at an elevation of 1,600 feet (488 meters). Trails and roads wind through this area. Pinnacle Road has a note reading “closed to trailers and vehicles over 20 feet long.” It coils past a picnic area to reach Pinnacle Overlook at 2,440 feet (744 meters). US Route 988 travels from near the visitor center to Sugar Run, which has a picnic area and is about a third of the way across the park. Trails in this area and moving northeast include Ridge Trail, Harlan Road Trail, Sugar Run Trail, Lewis Hollow Trail, and Gibson Gap Trail. A note near a spur-like, south-facing projection of the park reads “Entrance for Wilderness Road Campground and Picnic Area.” Beyond this along the body of the park are Gibson Gap with a primitive campsite, Hensley Settlement next to Hensley Cemetery. In that area are Hensley Camp, Martins Fork, and Chadwell Gap, all of which have primitive campsites. Continuing on are the Chadwell Gap Trail, Sand Cave, White Rocks Overlook, and White Rocks, which has a primitive campsite. The Ewing Trail connects this area to Civic Park, which has a picnic area but no trailers allowed, near the far right corner of the park. Back at the spur, US Route 58, also labeled Route of the Wilderness Road, branches from US Route 25E to travel in a northwest direction but south of the park. The road passes through or near the towns of Gibson Station and Wheeler; Wilderness Road State Park, which has a picnic area; James Boone Memorial (killed 1773); and the town of Ewing, south of Civic Park and the eastern end of the park. US Route 58 continues off the right edge of the map “To Interstate 81 and Bristol.” Back on US Route 25E, the road passes Pine Mountain and Pine Mountain State Resort Park, which is shaded in green near the top left corner of the map. Text in this area indicates that US Route 25E continues “To Pineville (site of historic Cumberland Ford)” and “To Corbin and Interstate 75.” Legend A scale in the lower right corner of the map measures distances of 1 and 2 kilometers and 1 and 2 miles. A legend below reads as follows: Black, narrowly dashed line for Hiking trail, Black, wide-dashed line for Hiking and bicycle trail, and Red line with a black semicircle for Parking area or overlook. Three symbols to the right represent Picnic area, Campground, and Primitive campsite. A table below is titled Trailhead Guide and it reads as follows: Pinnacle Overlook: Ridge Trail (to Gibson Gap, Hensley Settlement, Chadwell Gap, and White Rocks), Iron Furnace: Tennessee Road Trail (to historic pass, and access to Tri-State Peak Trail), Sugar Run Picnic Area: Sugar Run Trail (lower trail) (access to Ridge Trail), Sugar Run Trailhead: Sugar Run Trail (upper trail) (access to Ridge Trail), Shillalah Creek Trailhead: Shillalah Creek Trail (to Hensley Settlement), Civic Park Trailhead: Ewing Trail (access to Ridge Trail, Sand Cave, and White Rocks), Chadwell Gap Trailhead: Chadwell Gap Trail (to Ridge Trail, and Hensley Settlement), Wilderness Road Picnic Area: Lewis Hollow Trail (access to Skylight Cave, and Ridge Trail), and Wilderness Road Campground: Green Leaf Nature Trail, Honey Tree Spur Nature Trail, Gibson Gap Trail (access to Ridge Trail).
