Alt Text Map of Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. The park areas are shown in shades of green, surrounding areas are tan, towns are represented in yellow, and waterways are blue. Extended Description Assateague Island is a long, very thin island that parallels the Maryland and Virginia coasts across the Chincoteague Bay. Newport Bay and Sinepuxent Bay branch off the top edge of Chincoteague Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean is to the east. This description will start with the sites and amenities along the island moving north to south before shifting to the surrounding areas and transcribing the legend. Assateague Island Three-quarters of the length of Assateague Island is in Maryland with the southernmost quarter in Virginia. Most of the areas in Maryland are dark green except for a lighter green section about a quarter of the way down from the tip. The uppermost darker green section lines the Sinepuxent Bay. Verrazano Bridge spans Sinepuxent Bay to reach into the lighter green area. The Assateague Island Visitor Center (National Park Service) is on the mainland side of the Verrazano Bridge. A red line crosses the bridge and continues to the State Park Entrance Station. Bayberry Drive, also red, travels down past the State Park Campground Registration Office, a Nature Center, and a public campground are in the pale green section. Bayberry Drive continues south into the darker green area and a cluster of sites. Near North Ocean Beach, Bayside Drive reaches west to Bayside, which has a public campground and is on the inner coastline of the island. Another road branches off Bayberry Drive at Oceanside, also with a public campground, to reach Old Ferry Landing on the inner coastline as well. Bayberry Drive continues to South Ocean Beach, where a pale green line that picks up the trajectory is labeled Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) zone (permit required). Six sites where campers must backpack or paddle in are spaced along the rest of the length of Assateague Island in Maryland at Tingles, Little Levels, Pine Tree, Green Run on Green Run Bay, Pope Bay, and State Line. Once in Virginia, Assateague Island meets Chincoteague Island, which is shown in a lighter shade of tan. A note in the Atlantic Ocean near the Maryland section of Assateague Island reads “Wild beach (10 miles, 16 kilometers) can be reached on foot only.” The Assateague Lighthouse, Bateman Center/Refuge Visitor Center U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Woodland Trail, and unpaved road closed to vehicles are around Snow Goose Pond and the Swan Cove Pool. The pond is also encircled by the Wildlife Loop with a note in red text reading “vehicles permitted 3 pm to dusk.” Toms Cove Visitor Center National Park Service is south of the pool and on the perimeter of Toms Cove. Toms Cove Hook is a strip of land that encloses the cove and almost reaches the Chincoteague Inlet. The Former U.S. Coast Guard Station and Fishing Point are on the hook, where a section is labeled “Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) zone” with a note in red text, “permit required; closed March 15-August 31.” Just west of this, the town of Chincoteague is shown in yellow and Main Street, Maddox Boulevard, and Beach Road are labeled. The path of the Pony swim is indicated as a dotted blue line linking Assateague Island and Main Street in Chincoteague. The entire area around Assateague Island, but not including Chincoteague Island, is surrounded by a green line representing the Assateague Island National Seashore Boundary. Surrounding Areas Several towns marked in yellow include Ocean City along the Maryland coast to the north of Assateague Island and, from north to south, Berlin, Snow Hill, and Pocomoke City farther inland in Maryland. A route indicated with a red line extends from the red Bayberry Drive on the northern part of Assateague Island to cross the Verrazano Bridge. At this point, the line is encased in yellow as it continues first north on State Route 611 and is labeled “Recommended travel route.” State Route 611 also continues south to South Point, where there is a boat launch at the tip of the peninsula between Newport Bay and Sinepuxent Bay. Back to northbound State Route 611, the yellow-encased red line turns west on State Route 376 to Berlin, where it shifts to US Route 113, which travels southwest past Snow Hill. South of Snow Hill, the highlighted route branches onto State Route 12 to pass the smaller towns of Girdletree and Stockton. After a third town, Horntown, the yellow-encased path continues onto State Route 679 and then turns east on State Route 175. There it travels by the NASA Wallops Flight Facility, the NASA Visitor Center, and Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuge before crossing Chincoteague Bay to Chincoteague Island. The yellow casing continues along Maddox Boulevard and stops just short of Beach Road. Red text near State Route 12 reads, “The 50-mile distance between the north and south ends of Assateague Island takes about 1 ¼ hours to drive. We recommend the highlighted route shown on this map.” North of Berlin, US Route 113 continues “To Bay Bridge, Baltimore, and Washington.” Traveling in the other direction, US Route 113 passes Shad Landing and Milburn Landing, both of which are indicated in green, have public campgrounds and are part of Pokomoke River State Park. Continuing west on State Route 12 from Snow Hill leads “To Salisbury, Bay Bridge, Baltimore, and Washington.” US Route 13 crosses through Pocomoke City and goes south, eventually leading “To Norfolk via Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.” Legend A scale in the lower left corner of the map measures distances of 1 and 2 kilometers and 1 and 2 miles. The legend continues as follows: Dark green for National Park Service, Tan for National Wildlife Refuge, Gray for Refuge area closed to public March 15 through August 31, Light green for State Park, Gray dashed line for Unpaved road, Black dashed line for Walking trail, Green dashed line for Walking/biking trail (paved), Pale green line edged with blue for Over Sand Vehicle (OSV) zone (permit required), and Red line encased in yellow for Recommended travel route. Three symbols represent Public campground, Campsite: backpack or paddle in, and Boat launch.
