Alt Text Map of Wright Brothers National Memorial in North Carolina. The park area is shaded green and shaped like a fat bowtie. The monument is at the center of a winding walkway shaped like an orchid bloom. A blue triangle of the Atlantic Ocean juts down, covering the map’s top right corner. Extended Description This description will start by orienting the park with its surrounding streets, then it will go through the park and highlight its features. Roads are shown as white lines. State Route 12, also labeled North Virginia Dare Trail, runs parallel to the ocean. North Croatan Highway, also known as US Highway 158, runs parallel to that trail and forms the park’s northeast boundary. At the top of US Highway 158, text reads, “to Kitty Hawk.” At the bottom, text reads, “to Nags Head, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and Fort Raleigh Historic Site.” Collington Road runs perpendicular to these roads from State Route 12, curving around the park’s southwest corner and winding over the left edge of the map. An offshoot from this road near the southwest corner leads toward the Airstrip Parking. Beginning at State Route 12, Prospect Avenue crosses US Highway 158 and leads into the park’s entrance. Text here reads, “Park entrance is between mileposts 7 and 8.” The entry road loops down and up to the Entrance Station. From there, the road fans out into a Parking lot, near the Visitor Center, then swoops down again further into the park, eventually forming a wide circle around Kill Devil Hill, in the center of which sits the Wright Brothers Monument. A mauve-toned walkway from the Parking lot leads to the Visitor Center, then slopes down to two sites: the Reconstructed 1903 Quarters/Workshop and the Reconstructed 1903 Hangar. Next to these is a red triangle, labeled with text that reads “First Flight Boulder, lift-off point for reach flight.” Above the triangles, a series of 3 stacked yellow circles with numbers, followed by a vertical dotted line with a fourth circle at the top, is labeled as follows: First Flight Marker, 12 seconds, 120 feet, Second Flight Marker, 12 seconds, 175 feet, Third Flight Marker, 15 seconds, 200 feet, Fourth Flight Marker, 59 seconds, 852 feet. From this point, the walkway heads straight down to Kill Devil Hill, where it becomes a sloping, looping path around the hill and surrounding the monument. Five Parking areas are spaced around the circle, between the road and the walking path. On Kill Devil Hill’s west side is a Picnic Area, as well as a small road leading to the pilot’s booth. The Airstrip Parking area is just below. A darker, green-shaded rectangle connects to a line that stretches up toward the Fourth Flight Marker. This darker line is labeled “First Flight Airstrip.” South of Kill Devil Hill is the December 17, 1903 sculpture. In the lower left corner, a scale shows distances of 0.1 mile and 0.2 mile, and 0.1 kilometer and 0.2 kilometer.
