Alt Text Map of the buildings at Fort Union National Monument in New Mexico. The background is beige with the park buildings shown in perspective in brown, as if from slightly above the site. Trails between the buildings are represented by white solid lines, and the Santa Fe Trail is represented by a gray dashed line. Extended Description A park road leads to a loop in front of the Visitor Center, shown as a white building, near the bottom right corner of the map. A self-guided walking tour leaves the visitor center, crosses the Santa Fe Trail, and continues down toward an area marked Second Fort Remains. The Santa Fe Trail angles from near the visitor center up and across the far side of the site before disappearing off the top edge of the map. The walking tour path angles toward the four blocks of buildings to the Post Officer’s Quarters, which is numbered 1. Four blocky structures separate this from number 2, the Post Commander’s Home. From here the walking tour crosses a Parade Ground and a flagpole to number 3, Company Quarters. Continuing into the next block are number 4, a Guardhouse, and 5, a Military Prison. The angular, U-shaped building extending from the Guardhouse includes a Chapel, Shops, Laundresses’ Quarters, a Bakery, Company Quarters, and Band Quarters. Number 5 is at the corner where two buildings come together in an L shape. There are more Laundresses’ Quarters and Company Quarters in these units. Both areas surround Post Corrals and have Company Stables. Back by the Post Commander’s Home, the walking tour continues across the Parade Ground to another block of buildings. Visitors will first encounter number 6, Depot Officers’ Quarters, before passing Quartermaster's Quarters, a Sun Dial, Quartermaster’s Office, two cisterns, and number 7, the Commissary Office. The Clerk’s Office and Quarters (Post Office) is on the far corner of this block. Across from this line of buildings are the Mechanics Corral, Steam Engine, and number 8, Storehouses. The fourth and final block is numbered 9, Transportation Corral. Structures here include Teamsters’ Quarters, Sheds, Yardmaster, Grain Houses, and an Ice House. Number 10, the Hospital, lies outside the boundaries of these four blocks, closer to the visitor center. The hospital is made up of several interconnected buildings mostly enclosed within a wall or fence. Legend A compass in the top left corner shows north angled to the left.
