Alt Text Map of Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. The seashore and refuge are shown as a green area, the John F. Kennedy Space Center just south of it is tan, towns on the coastline are muted yellow, roads are represented in red, and the rest of the area is eggshell white. Extended Description This description will begin along the coast to describe the beaches, lagoon, rivers, and capes along Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge before moving south to describe the areas of John F. Kennedy Space Center. Next will be the towns inland, the roads that connect them all, and, finally, the legend. Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Starting near the top left corner of the map, the city of New Smyrna Beach is lined with tiny islands and inlets on the Atlantic Ocean. Next is the community of Bethune Beach before reaching the Canaveral National Seashore Visitor Information Center on Apollo Beach, which has a ranger station, wheelchair access, and drinking water. Shipyard Island with a boat launch and Turtle Mound with a self-guiding trail are just north of the information center. A note with Turtle Mound reads, “Ask at entrance stations for current wheelchair-accessible locations.” Just south of the information center, Eldora Hammock has a self-guided trail; Eldora has fishing docks located at Parking Areas #7 and #8; Castle Windy has a self-guided trail; and there is a boat launch where the road, State Route A1A, ends. Continuing southeast are Klondike Beach and Playalinda Beach, where a road coming east from the mainland ends. There is also a boat launch near Eddy Creek in this area, and a note reading “Ask at entrance stations for current wheelchair-accessible locations.” The space between the mainland and the beach areas widens around the long, narrow Mosquito Lagoon, which stretches south from Apollo Beach to Playalinda Beach. Orange Island, Old Channel, and Plantation Island are near Apollo Beach, and Pardon Island, Cucumber Island, and Turtlepen Point are close to Klondike Beach. A strip of land separates Mosquito Lagoon from the Indian River, which runs parallel to the coastline along the bottom two-thirds of the map. The Kennedy Parkway is on this strip from where it departs the mainland to the north, near Bill’s Hill, and past four boat launches. The Haulover Canal connects Mosquito Lagoon with the Indian River. The Manatee Observation Deck, with wheelchair access, is near the canal. South of this, the land flares out into a bulb shape jutting into the Indian River. The unpaved Bio Lab Road branches off from Kennedy Parkway to run along the Mosquito Lagoon until it ends at Playalinda Beach. Moving clockwise around this bit of land are Scrub Ridge with a self-guided trail at noon; a ranger station and drinking water at five o’clock, where the refuge meets the boundary of the space center; Oak and Palm Hammock Trails at six o’clock; Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Information Center, which has wheelchair access, a self-guided trail, and drinking water, at seven o’clock; an Observation Tower and Cruickshank Trail at ten o’clock; and Dummit Creek at eleven o’clock. The unpaved, one-way Black Point Wildlife Drive creates a clockwise circuit off of State Route 406 between Scrub Ridge and the Observation Tower. John F. Kennedy Space Center The land comprising John F. Kennedy Space Center takes up the bottom third of the entire peninsula. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, with wheelchair access, telephones, and drinking water, is about halfway down the site, to which public access is controlled. The Shuttle Landing Facility, Vehicle Assembly Building, and Visitor Complex line the middle of the main body of land. Launch Complex 39B and Launch Complex 39A are on the coast north of False Cape and then Cape Canaveral, which is near the elbow-shaped spit of land housing the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station to the southeast. This peninsula is separated from the other by the Banana River, which does not allow motorized boats. The southernmost portion of these peninsulas are eggshell white where the space center area ends. A dashed blue line traces the Intracoastal Waterway, which winds down around the islands from the top of the map, through Mosquito Lagoon, into the Haulover Canal, and off the coast in the Indian River until it reaches the bottom edge of the map. Mainland Florida Now on the mainland and again moving from north to south, Edgewater is just south of New Smyrna Beach. Riverbreeze Park, which has a boat launch, is on the coastline just north of Oak Hill, where Seminole Rest has wheelchair access and a self-guiding trail. Farther south along the Indian River is Titusville, which is east of South, Salt, and Loughman lakes and has the Canaveral National Seashore Headquarters and information. The town of Cocoa and Lake Poinsett are along the bottom of the map. Roads Interstate 95 and US Route 1 run parallel to the coastline, with Interstate 95 farther inland. Exits 249, 244, 231, 223, 220, 215, 212, 205, 202, and 201 are marked along Interstate 95 where other routes intersect the interstate. Interstate 95 and Route 1 are connected with short roads. From north to south, these include State Route 44, which becomes State Route A1A north of the refuge and then continues south of the space center. State Route 406 connects Interstate 95 and Route 1 before reaching into the refuge, where it meets State Route 402 along the border between the refuge and space center. South of that, State Routes 405 (also labeled NASA Parkway), 528, and 520 connect mainland Florida and the peninsula near Cocoa. NASA Parkway is labeled “public access controlled” east of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, and State Route 3, the Kennedy Parkway, is closed to the public within the space center boundaries. Route 528, or the Beachline Expressway, which has a toll, also reaches west into Orlando. Legend A legend in the top right corner of the map reads as follows: White line encased in black for Unpaved road, Dashed line for Trail, Green area for Seashore/Refuge area, and Tan for John F. Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral SFS–access control. Symbols for Ranger station, Wheelchair access, Self-guided trail, Boat launch, Telephone, and Drinking water follow before a scale measuring 5 kilometers and 5 miles.
