Alt Text Map of Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site in Pennsylvania. The long, narrow site stretches from the upper left corner of the map to the lower right corner through the Allegheny Mountains and is highlighted in green. The terrain around it is shaded in tan. Extended Description US Route 22 ripples across the top left corner of the map and leads “To Ebensburg, Johnstown, and Staple Bend Tunnel” off the left edge and “To Altoona, Hollidaysburg, and Interstate 99” off the top edge. Shown as a red line, Old Route 22 crosses US Route 22 at the Summit Exit and travels southeast through or alongside much of the park. The Route of Allegheny Portage Railroad runs alongside or parallel to Old Route 22 until both continue off the edge of the map near the lower right corner. Back in the top left corner, Tunnelhill Street crosses State Route 22 at the Gallitzin Exit and ends in a loop at the Visitor Center, which has information, parking, restrooms, and a self-guiding trail. The Visitor Center also serves as Park Headquarters and sits at an elevation of 2,440 feet (744 meters). Three trails branch off from the loop. One leads to an amphitheater not far from the Visitor Center. The second leads to an Observation Deck and Engine House 6 Exhibit Building along the Route of Allegheny Portage Railroad and then continues southeast along the railroad route. The third trail leads to Lemon House, which also sits along the railroad route and then heads northwest to a picnic area where parking and restrooms are also available. A picnic area with restrooms and parking is accessible via a spur just off Old Route 22 from the Summit Exit as well. A trail called 6 to 10 Trail travels southeast along the railroad route past Incline 6 and Skew Arch Bridge, which has parking. Old Route 22 flares slightly north of a one-way park road, also shown as a red line. Continuing down the Route of Allegheny Portage Railroad are Incline 7, Historic culvert 1490, Engine House 8 ruins, Incline 8, Historic culvert 1503 and retaining wall, and Muleshoe Bend, where parking is available. Muleshoe Bridge is on Old Route 22 near here, and Old Route 22 draws farther north from the railroad route for the remainder of its length. Continuing on the Allegheny Portage Railroad route are Historic culvert 1532, Plain Nine Reservoir, State Gamelands Parking (Vehicle access via Valley Forge Road), separate Handicap Parking (Vehicle access vial Valley Forge Road), Incline 9, and Historic culvert 1624. North of this, Old Route 22 flattens out to run east and Foot of Ten Road continues southwest from where it branches off Old Route 22. Immediately before Historic culvert 1635, Valley Forge Road crosses the railroad route and Foot of Ten Road before ending at Old Route 22. The final stretch of the railroad route passes Historic culvert 1692, Engine House 10 Ruins, and Incline 10 before ending at Historic Culvert 1733 near Foot of Ten Road. A bicycle trail that began near Muleshoe Bridge has woven mostly alongside the railroad route until this point, when it veers south to parking near Ranger Road and Dry Run Road on the southernmost tip of the park. Legend A legend in the lower center of the map reads as follows: Green dashed line for Bike trail, Green dotted line for Walking trail, and Yellow line for Allegheny Portage Railroad Route. Two columns of symbols represent Information, Picnic area, Self-guiding trail, Parking, and Restrooms. A scale below measures distances of 0.5 and 1 kilometer and 0.5 and 1 mile.
